blending in

Hallo allemaal,

Na 2 hele drukke weken vond ik het wel weer eens tijd om een stukje op m'n weblog te schrijven.
College life is nu echt begonnen en het wordt er niet bepaald makkelijker op - school begint echt druk te worden met veel papers, lezen en exams. Gelukkig zij er genoeg gelegenheden om een fijne studybreak te nemen door bijvoorbeeld even te voetballen, wat koffie te drinken in Slayter (het 'studentengebouw') of gewoon film kijken/fifa spelen met wat vrienden.

Ik ben intussen hier al helemaal gewend, het is alsof ik nooit ergens anders ben geweest. M'n Engels gaat met reuzenstappen vooruit en het is echt al zoveel beter dan toen ik hier kwam. Zowel qua woordenschat als grammatica, maar bovenal gaat het met sprongen vooruit qua vloeiendheid. Het is zo heerlijk om niet meer zoveel te hoeven nadenken over wat je wil zeggen, het meeste rolt er gewoon uit. En men zegt ook dat m'n accent al een stuk minder wordt, wat altijd mooi meegenomen is.

Hier is het inmiddels herfst en de campus begint al z'n beroemde herfstuitstraling te krijgen - en ik moet zeggen dat het inderdaad prachtig is! Een nadeel van de herfst; iedereen wordt wat ziekjes. Ik kan bijna niemand meer opnoemen die niet ziek(jes) is geweest, het is, of het aan het worden is. Maar met zoveel mensen op een relatief kleine ruimte is het ook niet zo gek dat een virusje zich gauw verspreidt. Ik heb inmiddels ook last van keelpijn, en ik hoop dat het gauw overgaat

Er is recent eigenlijk weinig spannends gebeurt, over 2 weken begint fall break en dan ga ik naar een concert van de arctic monkeys, waar ik heel veel zin in heb! Ook is 22 oktober m'n eerste 'echte' voetbalwedstrijd tegen Kenyon, en daar heb ik heel heel heel veel zin in!

Ik laat jullie het natuurlijk weten als er nog iets anders spannends gebeurt. Voor nu, ik ga weer aan de slag en ik hoop dat jullie genieten van mijn nieuwe column, die ik nog steeds elke week met plezier schrijf.

De nieuwe column, about Love.
I love you!
“I love you!” That’s a phrase I hear here all the time. Often I’m not the subject of this phrase though, for I have made myself quite unlovable after my last two columns. Nevertheless, I hear this phrase a lot around me, whether people mean romantic love to their significant other, friendly love to their BFF or family love to their parents. It’s the same phrase, but it has so many different meanings in my opinion. When you say “Ik hou van jou” (I love you) In the Netherlands, for instance, it is a big, very big thing! I remember saying it to my girlfriend for the very first time – it was not just a phrase, I actually was saying that I love her. Also, family love is hardly ever expressed. Most Dutch people only say it when they really miss their parents, when they study abroad for instance, or when they need money – again, when they study abroad for instance. The great thing of making such a big thing out of those three words (or four, in Dutch) is the fact that it retains its value. It’s a great feeling when somebody actually tells you that he or she loves you. On the other hand, you tend to forget to mention it sometimes, although they deserve to hear it.
Here, in the US of A, it is the exact opposite. People say it all the time. I don’t know whether people want conformation for the notion that they are loved, or that people just really love each other that much (when I look at all the hooking up going on here at Denison, I tend to agree with the latter of the two explanations). It is great that people love each other so much here, and that they have the urge to express that to one another, but let’s be honest – doesn’t it lose it’s meaning when it is said again and again and again? What does it mean when you say it to your dearly beloved when you say it to your friends all the time?
Don’t think that Dutch people aren’t intimate at all, though. We might be a little thrifty with saying “I love you,” but we are extremely generous with our kisses! In some (European) countries, people give each other one or two kisses when they meet each other – it’s a form of greeting – but we, the Dutch, we give even three kisses, perverted as we are! And we do it all the time. Kisses when it’s someone’s birthday, kisses when someone graduated, or just three kisses when we meet a close friend or relative. Don’t get me wrong though, we don’t kiss when we meet somebody for the first time – it’s not a way of introducing oneself – but soon after that, the kissing starts. You should see it as the Dutch version of hugging. Europeans just prefer kissing to hugging, whereas people in the states prefer it the other way around. To illustrate my point: French kissing is a European invention, whereas grinding was invented here in the States – a very intimate form of hugging.
Speaking about grinding, I find it a very interesting phenomenon. Some people take it very far. It is like some guys have to rinse off a stain of a girl’s pants with their crotch. I mean come on guys, seriously? She’s somebody’s daughter for God’s sake.
I guess here in the states it really is a “crazy little thing called love.” But let’s not take it too far okay? Say something nice, or at least introduce yourself before you grab a girl by her waist, and you could buy her Whit’s sometime. I know that dating is not done in college, but you could at least be nice. Most important of all though – wrap it before you attack it. Tot ziens!
